JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory testing on blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of an associates degree from accredited MLT program.  ASCP certification or eligibility.
  • The analytical ability to evaluate potential erroneous laboratory results.
  • The interpersonal skills necessary to assist co-workers when not busy, answer inquiries by telephone for laboratory results, and provide laboratory results by telephone.
  • Laboratory computer skills necessary to enter and release laboratory results as well as document telephone calls and enter appropriate result comments.

JOB DUTIES (* denotes “essential function”)

  • Demonstrates the WMH Customer Service Values, which are key in providing quality service to patients and customers. *
  • Performs patient specimen testing in an accurate and timely manner according to hospital and laboratory protocol.*
  • Performs all daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of all analyzers.*
  • Runs and documents control samples according to procedure.*
  • Notifies appropriate medical staff or customer service staff of panic values or questionable results in a timely manner.*
  • Prepares reagents and controls properly.*
  • Maintains work area in a neat and organized manner.*
  • Notifies supervisor or “Charge Tech” or specimen, analyzer, or reagent problems when appropriate.*
  • Remains informed of developments in area of expertise by attending seminars and workshops, reading pertinent literature, and so forth.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
