JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the GI Lab Manager and under the supervision of a registered nurse and according to established policies and procedures assists with endoscopy and out patient procedures as a tech member of the endoscopy/procedural team. Prepares instruments and supplies and maintains a clean and safe working environment. While actual duties and responsibilities may vary, the following are general expectations of the work being performed.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- The interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, physicians and other nursing staff personnel.
- The ability to keep all patient information confidential.
- Occasionally assists with transporting the patients and equipment.
- The ability necessary to be able to assist gastroenterologist according to hospital policy.
- The level of knowledge normally held by a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician is required.
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience as a CNA, MA, or EMT. Knowledge of aseptic technique preferred.
- Successful completion of CPR with current certification required
- Successful completion of GI Technician Program
JOB DUTIES
- Proceeds to assigned room on time.
- Ensures the presence of all instruments, equipment and supplies necessary for endoscopy/out patient procedure in accordance with doctors’ preference and established standards and in conjunction with the procedure room nurse begins to set up before patient arrives in room, inspects instruments and equipment to ensure appropriate functionality, prepare required supplies, arrange instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Assists gastroenterologist as a technical assistant according to prescribed standards. Passes instruments, devices and sponges according to the doctor’s request and anticipation of needs. Assists the physician with obtaining and retrieving specimens, foreign bodies and previously placed therapeutic devices.
- Utilizes strict sterile clean techniques in all appropriate situations and monitors the use of such by other personnel.
- Assists in the transportation and positioning of patients when necessary.
- Assists the gastroenterologist with specimen collection working collaboratively with the procedure room nurse for accurate preparation and labeling.
- Appropriately prepare instruments and devices for decontamination by following specifications for pre-cleaning. Returns soiled instruments and devices to the soiled utility room. Performs a manual clean by then placing instruments and devices in appropriate high level disinfection/sterilization machine/solutions.
- Performs care, maintenance and appropriate storage of instruments according to the manufacturer’s specifications, SGNA guidelines and departmental policies. Performs daily routine maintenance of reprocessing equipment according to the guidelines, standards and manufacturers specifications.
- Restocks supplies in the procedure and recovery rooms, remove soiled linen bags to appropriate receptacle, cleans dirty patient carts and prepares with clean linen, maintains reprocessing logs, refrigerator logs and equipment repair logs. Evaluates equipment and sends out for repair as necessary.
- Assists in the orientation and development of other staff members. Functions as a preceptor when appropriate.
- Evaluates environmental safety and provides environment that is safe based on the age and developmental status of the patient.
- Assists in the Recovery Room with post procedure care under the direction of the Recovery Room nurse. Documenting vital signs, ambulating patients and provides for patients biological and comfort needs.
- Assumes responsibility as a unit secretary during breaks, lunches and staffing shortages as necessary.
- Participates in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
- Conforms to the established Standards of Behavior.
- Other duties as assigned.
