Reporting to a nurse manager and under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, is responsible for assisting with surgical procedures (Caesarean Section and Tubal Ligation) as a scrub member of the Labor and Delivery team and for providing all aspects of direct and indirect patient care up to the validated level of training.
Job Description
1. Ensures the presence of all instruments, equipment and supplies necessary for surgical procedure in accordance with doctors’ preference and established standards, and in conjunction with the circulating nurse, completes scrubbing and begins set-up before patient arrives in room, inspects all instrument trays to ensure they include required items and prepares for procedures by arranging instruments, sutures, and linen in proper order.
2. Assists surgeon as a scrubbed assistant according to prescribed standards; passes instruments, sutures and sponges according to doctor’s request and anticipation of needs; assists circulating nurse in maintaining accurate count of sponges, instruments and sharps and other articles ensuring all are accounted for during the following procedures; assists physician with procedure as directed.
3. Utilizes strict aseptic techniques in all appropriate situations and monitors the use of such by other personnel.
4. Assists in the transportation and positioning of patients when necessary.
5. Adheres to the standards of care and standards of practice, policies and procedures of the hospital and Department of Perinatal Services.
Job Requirements
1. Level of knowledge equivalent to the completion of an OR Technician program at an accredited college.
2. Certification in Operating Room Technology preferred.
3. Must participate in annual CPR course and all compulsory in-services.
