JOB SUMMARY

Utilizing medical knowledge, education and training, and experience with surgical anatomy, physiology, aseptic technique, instrumentation, and surgical psychomotor skills, the Surgical Assistant, under the direction and supervision of the surgeon, assists in assigned surgical procedures and services. The certified surgical assistant may serve as a preceptor to Surgical Assistants in training and function as a resource person to OR staff.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

A graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant (PA) program with certification and Illinois license or completion of medical education and training as a physician, but unlicensed to practice or a Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA)

Certified member of the American Board of Surgical Assistants or the National Surgical Assistant Association

CPR Certification


JOB DUTIES

  • Demonstrates the WMH Customer Service Values, which are key in providing quality service to patients and customers. *
  • Assists the surgeon, performing such duties as retracting for exposure, reflecting tissue, cutting sutures and tissue as directed, harvesting veins, assisting with wound closure, placement and securing of drains and dressings as directed and supervised by the surgeon. *
  • Assists in the preparation of the surgical patient, performing such duties as urinary catheterization, surgical reparation and draping of the field and maintaining integrity of operative field. *
  • Assists the surgeon in the operation and manipulation of surgical equipment, such as handling of laparoscopic or minimally invasive technology to provide exposure and facilitate the operative procedure. *
  • Demonstrates and teaches other healthcare professionals: surgical assistants, house officers and surgeons to use equipment with which the Surgical Assistant is proficient, under the direction of the surgeon.* Prepares the patient and room for surgery, or between cases, turning the room over to facilitate the work of the unit in patient care; assists the nursing staff as available in positioning patients, supplies, equipment to assure safe patient care in the operating suite.*
