JOB SUMMARY

The manager of the Central Sterile Supply department is responsible and accountable for maintaining and directing the operations of the department according to approved standards and services including the Illinois Facility Act, IDPH, OSHA, and all other regulatory bodies.  Responsible for maintaining a consistent flow of clean and sterile supplies for surgical services and patient care areas.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Certification in Sterile Processing or licensure by the Illinois State Board of Nursing if RN, Certificate in SPD Management preferred
  2. HS Graduate
  3. A minimum of four years of applicable experience, preferably in a hospital environment, including prior supervisory experience in a Surgical Sterile Processing Department.
  4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrable detail orientation.
  5. Familiarity with personal computer systems including Word and Excel software and surgical systems.

JOB DUTIES

  1. Directs and supervises functions in the Central Supply Area.
  2. Directs activities of all personnel in the department.
  3. Promotes the observance of administrative and technical procedures according to the hospital and nursing department policies as well as IDPH.
  4. Maintains a clean environment to promote maintenance of disinfection and storage of sterile supplies.
  5. Assumes responsibility for requisitioning, storing, preparing and issuing of packs, treatment trays, special trays, and other equipment required for care of patients.
  6. Enforces standards and procedures in cleaning, sterilizing, assembling and storing supplies, materials and equipment.
  7. Instructs personnel in aseptic technique.
  8. Maintains special care of fragile and delicate equipment, such as surgical instrumentation.
  9. Requests supplies and repairs for proper maintenance of equipment, i.e. sterilizers.
  10. Maintains adequate supplies and evaluates stock in relation to volume and patient flow.
  11. Orientates new employees to the department.  Maintains records of all orientation and competency files.
  12. Assumes responsibility and accountability for maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
  13. Ensures patient safety by providing equipment and supplies to departments that the integrity is inspected and the equipment is safe, clean and sterile for patient use and procedural integrity.
  14. Actively participates in committees as assigned; works on projects for the improvement of patient care delivery.
  15. Maintains written departmental specific competencies and educational requirements for all staff.
  16. Consults with the director for problems related to the operation of the department; recommends changes in policies to carry out hospital and unit objectives more effectively.
  17. Ensures department compliance with regulatory requirements.
  18. Contributes to the development of operating and capital budget; ensures that the department operates within fiscal budgetary parameters.  Accounts for the monthly variance reports.
  19. Integrates department functions with all departments with major focus on surgical and other procedural areas.

Other Responsibilities: 

  1. Responsible for annual evaluations of all personnel in CSPD.
  2. Develops departmental and personal goals on an annual basis.
  3. Creates in personnel an awareness of responsibility for economy and care in handling of equipment and supplies.

  6. Performs other duties as assigned.
