General Summary 

The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for planning and overall operation of all pharmaceutical services at West Suburban Medical Center in accordance with Federal, State, local and West Suburban Medical Center policies and medical directives.  Provides leadership for pharmacy team, has a matrix reporting relationship with the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with other Department Directors, Administrators and Medical Staff.  Works closely with Pipeline Health Chicago Market Pharmacy Team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care Management

  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and standards of practices affecting patient care consistent with departmental, hospital and market philosophy and objectives.
  • Develops programs to ensure pharmacy-related teaching of nursing staff, medical staff and hospital affiliated students.
  • Conceptualizes and creates environment for pharmacy personnel to be integral members of collaborative care teams
  • Provides an environment for staff to deliver quality care given the available resources.

 Policy Development and Quality Improvement

  • Creates, collaborates and improves policies to enhance all aspects of pharmaceutical care
  • Participates in evaluating the effectiveness of quality assurance activities.
  • Utilizes evaluation and audit findings to maintain and improve standards of pharmaceutical care and service to patients.
  • Produces measureable benefit from pharmaceutical Care

 Personnel Management

  • Develops an effective pharmacy team through selection, development and counseling of pharmacy managers, clinical pharmacy specialists, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy buyers and pharmacy students
  • Fosters employee engagement to promote peer support, cooperative planning and problem solving.
  • Promotes continuing education and actively participates in informal and formal educational programs.
  • Serves as a resource to others in areas of their own expertise.
  • Hires, promotes, demotes, separates and writes/administers performance evaluations to subordinate staff as necessary within their assigned area.

Financial Management

  • Prepares, recommends and collaborates in the development of budgets including personnel, operating expenses, medications and capital equipment
  • Develops goals that are compatible with hospital and market objectives
  • Researches, develops and implements cost-containing initiatives
  • Monitors the budget on a monthly basis, provides analysis and plans to correct any variance.
  • Evaluates practice and takes action to promote cost effective delivery services.

 Market and Interdepartmental Duties

  • Champions the development and implementation of market pharmacy initiatives
  • Interprets and represents pharmacy needs to all hospital and market departments and divisions
  • Collaborates with the medical staff and other departments in order to meet hospital and pharmacy goals
  • Works closely with Chicago Market Clinical Informatics Pharmacist and Pharmacy Operations Managers in all pharmacy-related informational projects

 Administrative and Professional Practice

  • Effectively defines vision and mission, and develops goals and objectives to promote success
  • Maintains current knowledge of pharmacy practice in the hospital and nationally and aids in the implementation of those
  • Identifies and analyzes trends affecting health care and pharmacy practice.
  • Promotes and participates in clinical and operational research
  • Assumes responsibilities for special projects.
  • Sets short and long term goals for divisional staff’s professional growth.
  • Develops, actively follows and evaluates progress in a plan for professional growth
  • Remains current with current laws governing pharmacy in Illinois and ensures that policies, standards and practice within the designated clinical division are in compliance and are consistent with the goals of the Hospital.
  • Provides opportunity for staff to enhance their knowledge and skills, maintains an awareness of current trends and new methods to continue their professional growth.
